10. Otros pasatiempos
Informarse, navegar, dibujar…

THE WHOLE EXISTENCE IS NOTHING BUT MUSIC

God is not a person but the ultimate harmony of existence;
it is an orchestra.

Everything is in tune with everything else.
The trees are in tune with the earth, the earth is in tune with the wind, the wind is in tune with the sky, the sky is in tune with the stars, and so on, so forth. There is no hierarchy. Even the smallest blade of grass is as significant as the biggest star.
They ALL contribute to the orchestra of existence.
They ALL enhance it, enrich it.

Everything is going on in such deep accord,

but man remain unaware of it.

That unawareness becomes his misery and he starts suffering from his own invented nightmares. Otherwise life is a celebration it is a constant celebration, a continuum, a non-ending festival. We just have to become a little more silent to be able to hear it. And when we are absolutely silent, not only silent but when we are silence — then we disappear, then we are part of this whole cosmic harmony. That is the meeting of man with GOD the UNIVERSE, of the part with the whole.
We disappear in one sense, we dissolve in one sense — as an ego, as a person — but we become the whole, so in another sense we ARE for the first time.

The dewdrop disappears but becomes the ocean. It is not the loser, it loses nothing. It loses only its small boundaries which were not worth keeping. In fact they were creating this whole trouble: the fear, the trembling, the constant fear that the sun will rise and it will disappear, it will die.

Mahavira has said that man’s life, lived as an ego, is just like a dewdrop hanging on a blade of grass, constantly afraid. Just a small breeze and that’s the end: the dewdrop falls to the earth and disappears.

Or soon the morning will be there and the sun will rise and the dewdrop will evaporate. How can one live surrounded by so much death? All our boundaries are in fact drawn by our death; we are defined by our death. The moment we lose our boundaries we lose our death too.

When we are eternal, then when we are infinite.

Remember that meditation is succeeding if you become more and more alert of the great music that is always there — it just needs a sympathetic ear.

Meditation creates that ear, that heart.

The 10 Very Best Zen Stories

Many teachings from Zen-Buddhism
are told in short and delightful zen stories.

They are usually designed to develop the mind
and to free it from distortions
and so to connect with our spirit.

Some of them are really inspiring and enlightening.

It is helpful to the mind to think about them and feel the deeper meaning. Even if it is not possible to grasp them fully, the beauty and simplicity of the message usually gets through to us one way or the other.

The following 10 Zen stories are a selection of the ones I found most inspiring and really worth to ponder about. Some may be instantly understood, some others need to be thought through and recognized in oneself.

They are about the following topics: life in the present moment, different perspectives, attachment, resistance, judgment, delusion, beliefs and thought as mental concepts but not truth and unconditional love. Please feel free to post your interpretation or other stories into the comments.

After reading the first, follow it’s advice to read all the others. :)

1. A Cup of Tea

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”

“Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

2. The Burden

Two monks were returning to the monastery in the evening. It had rained and there were puddles of water on the road sides. At one place a beautiful young woman was standing unable to walk accross because of a puddle of water. The elder of the two monks went up to a her lifted her and left her on the other side of the road, and continued his way to the monastery.

In the evening the younger monk came to the elder monk and said, “Sir, as monks, we cannot touch a woman ?”

The elder monk answered “yes, brother”.

Then the younger monk asks again, “but then Sir, how is that you lifted that woman on the roadside ?”

The elder monk smiled at him and told him ” I left her on the other side of the road, but you are still carrying her.”

3. Finding a Piece of the Truth

One day Mara, the Evil One, was travelling through the villages of India with his attendants. he saw a man doing walking meditation whose face was lit up on wonder. The man had just discovered something on the ground in front of him. Mara’s attendant asked what that was and Mara replied, “A piece of truth.”

“Doesn’t this bother you when someone finds a piece of truth, O Evil One?” his attendant asked. “No,” Mara replied. “Right after this, they usually make a belief out of it.”

4. The Other Side

One day a young Buddhist on his journey home came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him, he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young Buddhist yells over to the teacher, “Oh wise one, can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river”?

The teacher ponders for a moment looks up and down the river and yells back, “My son, you are on the other side”.

5. Is That So?

The Zen master Hakuin was praised by his neighbors as one living a pure life.

A beautiful Japanese girl whose parents owned a food store lived near him. Suddenly, without any warning, her parents discovered she was with child.

This made her parents very angry. She would not confess who the man was, but after much harassment at last named Hakuin.

In great anger the parents went to the master. “Is that so?” was all he would say.

When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. “Is that so?” Hakuin said calmly as he accepted the child.

A year later the girl-mother could stand it no longer. She told her parents the truth – that the real father of the child was a young man who worked in the fishmarket.

The mother and father of the girl at once went to Hakuin to ask his forgiveness, to apologize at length, and to get the child back again.

Hakuin was willing. In yielding the child, all he said was: “Is that so?”

6. Maybe

Once upon the time there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” said the farmer.

7. Cliffhanger

One day while walking through the wilderness a man stumbled upon a vicious tiger. He ran but soon came to the edge of a high cliff. Desperate to save himself, he climbed down a vine and dangled over the fatal precipice.

As he hung there, two mice appeared from a hole in the cliff and began gnawing on the vine.

Suddenly, he noticed on the vine a plump wild strawberry. He plucked it and popped it in his mouth. It was incredibly delicious!

8. The Blind Men and the Elephant

Several citizens ran into a hot argument about God and different religions, and each one could not agree to a common answer. So they came to the Lord Buddha to find out what exactly God looks like.

The Buddha asked his disciples to get a large magnificent elephant and four blind men. He then brought the four blind to the elephant and told them to find out what the elephant would “look” like.

The first blind men touched the elephant leg and reported that it “looked” like a pillar. The second blind man touched the elephant tummy and said that an elephant was a wall. The third blind man touched the elephant ear and said that it was a piece of cloth. The fourth blind man hold on to the tail and described the elephant as a piece of rope. And all of them ran into a hot argument about the “appearance” of an elephant.

The Buddha asked the citizens: “Each blind man had touched the elephant but each of them gives a different description of the animal. Which answer is right?”

9. Right and Wrong

When Bankei held his seclusion-weeks of meditation, pupils from many parts of Japan came to attend. During one of these gatherings a pupil was caught stealing. The matter was reported to Bankei with the request that the culprit be expelled. Bankei ignored the case.

Later the pupil was caught in a similar act, and again Bankei disregarded the matter. This angered the other pupils, who drew up a petition asking for the dismissal of the thief, stating that otherwise they would leave in a body.

When Bankei had read the petition he called everyone before him. “You are wise brothers,” he told them. “You know what is right and what is not right. You may go somewhere else to study if you wish, but this poor brother does not even know right from wrong. Who will teach him if I do not? I am going to keep him here even if all the rest of you leave.”

A torrent of tears cleansed the face of the brother who had stolen. All desire to steal had vanished.

10. Nothing Exists

Yamaoka Tesshu, as a young student of Zen, visited one master after another. He called upon Dokuon of Shokoku.

Desiring to show his attainment, he said: “The mind, Buddha, and sentient beings, after all, do not exist. The true nature of phenomena is emptiness. There is no realization, no delusion, no sage, no mediocrity. There is no giving and nothing to be received.”

Dokuon, who was smoking quietly, said nothing. Suddenly he whacked Yamaoka with his bamboo pipe. This made the youth quite angry.

“If nothing exists,” inquired Dokuon, “where did this anger come from?”

Bonus 11. Teaching the Ultimate

In early times in Japan, bamboo-and-paper lanterns were used with candles inside. A blind man, visiting a friend one night, was offered a lantern to carry home with him.

“I do not need a lantern,” he said. “Darkness or light is all the same to me.”

“I know you do not need a lantern to find your way,” his friend replied, “but if you don’t have one, someone else may run into you. So you must take it.”

The blind man started off with the lantern and before he had walked very far someone ran squarely into him. “Look out where you are going!” he exclaimed to the stranger. “Can’t you see this lantern?”

“Your candle has burned out, brother,” replied the stranger.

Vitaminas A y C.

ATTRACT YOUR SOUL MATE WITH THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

By Harmony Rousseau

How do you use the law of attraction to attract your soul mate?
The law of attraction says that
you attract into your life whatever you focus your energy on –
whether that’s wanted or unwanted.
The “vibes” you put out into the Universe are
either positive or negative and
the Universe responds accordingly.

Analyze Yourself

This is apparent in how you appear when you go out. If you are feeling good about yourself, you wear something nice, smile, and make eye contact with people – thus sending out positive vibes.
If you are consumed by your thoughts and worries, you tend to throw on whatever is available and remain internally focused when out and about.

You can tell whenever you are talking with someone and they suddenly seem like they are no longer there – as if they were following your conversation up to a point, but then you lost them. Often, you can also tell when you’ve just said something that your conversational partner found offensive or disagreed with – their body language radically shifts.

Many times, we aren’t even aware of how we present ourselves to others. We don’t realize that changes in tone or body language come across as dramatically as they can. We can’t see ourselves slouching, crossing our arms, leaning away from the person, and assuming other defensive body positions. Yet the person we speak with can sense our vibes. They can tell when we are angry or annoyed or distracted – even if we are halfheartedly trying to fake being interested.

If you want to attract your soul mate, start by looking at yourself.
What image do you present to people?
If you can, video tape a conversation between you and a friend and take notes.
Do you look confident and attractive?
Do you put out the right vibes that say you are a warm, funny, caring individual?
Do you have any quirks or nervous habits that you can change?

Inventory Your Relationships

Next, take a brief inventory of the different relationships that are currently in your life.
Which relationships support and encourage you?
Which are negative and critical?
If you have more negative than positive relationships in your life, ask yourself why you attract and are attracted to negative people.

Now, think about those positive relationships you have.
What attracts you to those people?
What do you enjoy and appreciate most about them?

Get completely clear about both the negative qualities you don’t want to attract and the positive qualities you do want to attract. Shift your focus and attention so that whenever you see those positive qualities in people you meet, you befriend them.

Attract Your Soul Mate

How can you apply this to attracting your soul mate?
Start by building a list of all the negative characteristics you’ve experienced in your previous relationships. This is the list of things you don’t want – or potential deal breakers – in your next relationship.
If a number of your previous mates shared similar negative characteristics like ignoring you, bad communicator, pessimistic, no job, travels too much, etc, perhaps you can uncover a pattern and stop yourself from dating the next person who fits in with your exes.

Now, create a list of all the positives you want in your relationship.
What do you want?
What are the positive qualities you need to feel loved, cherished, admired, and respected?

Finally, take a hard look at yourself.

Often the things we are most critical about in others are things we do ourselves.
Are you emitting positive vibes?
Do you meet all your requirements for having a positive, loving relationship?
Or do you still harbor baggage and bad feelings towards people in your past?

You will attract that which you focus on, so if you want the ideal relationship with The One, you must live your life to its fullest.
Forgive and let go of any negativity you still hold on to or that will become an obstacle to attracting your soul mate.

How to Manifest Money and Happiness

By Harmony Rousseau

"One of my goals is to manifest more money in my life. And while I’m hoping that I’ll win tonight’s Powerball lottery and thus solve all my financial concerns for life, I’m also looking for practical ways to make money quickly. Call it a contingency plan, just in case I don’t win.

I used to have the belief that if I want more money in my life, I would need to work hard for it. Fundamentally, I believe that if I want to make $100, I need to give at least $100 in value in exchange for cash. However, how I provide that value can vary dramatically.

My first job in high school was busing tables at a local restaurant. For that, I made minimum wage plus a small percentage of whatever the waitresses made in tips that day. Eventually, I graduated to waitressing. Then, I went to college and grad school, learned new skills, and got a higher paying job consulting with businesses about how best to market their products and services.

What I make now is considerably more than clearing tables at a restaurant, and it takes a lot less time to make $100 because the value I provide as a marketing consultant is perceived as much higher value than a bus girl at a restaurant.

In short, one of the quickest ways to manifest more money is to increase the perceived value of what you offer. If you do a job that virtually anyone can do, its perceived value is lower than if you do something more specialized – that fewer people can do.

Do What You Love

If you are stuck in a job that doesn’t pay well or isn’t interesting or undervalues your skills, perhaps it’s time for a change.
Manifesting involves not only understanding what you want, but aligning yourself with the ways to achieve your goals. You will know when you are in alignment by the way you feel when you focus on it. If you feel happy and excited, you’ve opened yourself up to doing bigger and better things – and are one step closer to your goals.

Working in a restaurant left me drained. I had to work long hours with little encouragement. Every day, I did the same thing, so there wasn’t much reward in going to work. Now, I help people every day overcome their problems, challenges and obstacles. With each business I work with, I build new relationships and get to solve unique challenges. It’s much more exciting and motivating.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Do what you love and money will come.”
This is only partially true.
Doing what you love is a great first step, but you must also demonstrate to others that what you do has value to them.

If you can help others find joy or make money or better their lives in some way,

you are on the right track.

Live With Passion

Finally, let your passion shine.
When others see how passionate you are and how much value you add to their lives, they will be drawn to you. Most people prefer to follow rather than lead. They live boring lives and are just getting by. They suppress their desires for excitement and adventure by telling themselves they will have that in the future – when they get that raise, find a life partner, have children, retire, etc.

Life is short. If you always put off what you want in hopes that you will eventually get around to doing it one day, you will miss those great opportunities in the here and now. One day you will wake up and wonder how you got where you are and why you didn’t take risks along the way.

As Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

POSITIVE THINKING : THINK IN TERMS OF OPTIMISM

Let it become one of the fundamental rules of your life.
Even if you come across a negative, find something positive in it.
You will always be able to find something, and the day you become skillful at finding the positive in the negative, you will dance with joy.

Try it, try the new vision of life.
Think in terms of optimism, don’t be a pessimist.
The pessimist creates hell around himself and lives in it — you live in the world you create.

Remember, there is not only one world, there are as many worlds as there are minds in the world.
I live in my world, you live in your own world.
They are not only different, they never overlap.
They are utterly different, they exist on different planes.

Atisha makes it a fundamental rule for his disciples to live in a happy frame of mind. Then you start turning each opportunity into a challenge for growth.

For example, somebody insults you.
Now it is so clear that you have been insulted, how can you practice a happy frame of mind now?
Yes, it can be practiced. Insult a buddha and you will know.

Gautam Buddha was insulted once.
He was passing by a village, and the villagers were very against him. It was impossible for them to comprehend what he was teaching. Compared to the buddhas, the whole world is always very primitive, very unsophisticated, very stupid. The people gathered and insulted him very much.

Buddha listened very silently and then he said,
“If you are finished, can I take leave of you, because I have to reach the other village, and they must be waiting for me. If you are not finished, then when I return tomorrow morning you can come again and finish your job.”

One man from the crowd asked,
“Have you not heard us?
We have been insulting you, abusing you. We have been using all kinds of dirty words, anything that we can find.”

Buddha laughed. He said,
“You have come a little too late — you should have come ten years ago. Then I was in the same frame of mind as you are; then I would have replied, and replied well. But now this is simply an opportunity for me to be compassionate, to be meditative. I am thankful to you that you allowed me this opportunity. This is just a test — a test of whether or not I have anything of the negative lurking anywhere in my unconscious mind.

“And I am happy to declare to you, friends, that not even a single shadow of the negative has passed through my mind. I have remained utterly blissful, you have not been able to affect me in any way. And I am tremendously happy that you gave me such a great opportunity. Very few people are as kind as you are.”

This is how one should use situations, this is how a sannyasin should use negative opportunities for inner growth, for inner understanding, for meditativeness, for love, for compassion.

Once you have learned this happy frame of mind, this positive vision of life, you will be surprised that the whole existence starts functioning in a totally different way.

It starts mothering you.
It starts helping you in every possible way,
it becomes a great friend.

IN TUNE WITH NATURE : Soumitra Datta (photos)

“A camera is a small magic box that freezes a slice of life.”—Soumitra Datta

Soumitra Datta’s love for nature propelled him to take up landscape photography.

He shares his beliefs and insights with Digantika Mitra.

Travelling with family always provides the much-needed recreation and relaxation in our lives. With Soumitra Datta, however, it would decide the course of his life. During his childhood days, wherever he travelled with his parents, he would encounter the varied colours and ambience of fields, rivers, mountains and more—all of which left a long-lasting impression on him. This abiding interest in nature motivated him to draw spiritual strength, and persuaded him to take up landscape photography.

Exploring Seasons

As a photographer, Soumitra never follows fixed guidelines. He even advises aspiring photographers to be their own judge and experience the spirit of nature through their hearts. “The more deeply you involve yourself with nature, the more clearly you will visualise its inner beauty,” he explains. “A grassland may appeal to you differently in different seasons. But only you can judge when to best captivate it.” Personally, he prefers to photograph in seasons when there is an interplay of clouds and light in the sky.

The Photographer’s Philosophy

According to Soumitra, connecting with nature is very important and so is being patient. “A single beam of light falling on a floating leaf at one corner of the space shared in the frame can change your whole perspective of vision and understanding. The straight descriptive earthscape becomes impressionistic with the sudden, transient light and atmosphere, which is so momentary!” Thus, this photographer shoots landscapes with the mind of a philosopher, heart of a poet and hand of an artist.

Optimistic About Technology This photographer accepts modern digital cameras with zest. He believes that the digital camera has opened newer avenues. “You could be sure of what exactly you are capturing even in very poor lighting conditions”, he explains. “With the advancement of digital systems, images are technically richer while colours are more accurate with a lot more depth.”

Towards Preservation

Soumitra has felt a growing need to preserve nature for our own existence by maintaining ecological balance. Through his work, he aims to create awareness about the need to preserve our pristine landscapes.

He further desires that others can utilise his images and advocate the same feeling about nature’s conservation. He understands that photographs cannot turn the world around instantly; but they can surely stir people’s minds and bring about the beginning of change for the better.

About Soumitra

He is an engineer by profession and a zealous nature photographer. He has published many books and also has many exhibitions to his credit. He was a joint course co-ordinator and fellow teacher of a photography course under the aegis of ACEEC of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
